What Do You Think Of The New Freddy?
Even though the new Freddy Krueger movie hasn’t come out yet, we all know that Robert Englund, who has always played Freddy in all of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, will not be reprising the role of the character he made famous. This is understandable, as Robert Englund is getting up there in age and probably has a lot of projects going on right now, if I remember correctly, I believe he mainly directs and produces movies now, rather than acting.
The new Freddy will be Jackie Earle Haley, who recently starred in the movie “Watchmen”. I’m not very familiar with him, but I wanted to ask all of you today, what do you think of Jackie Earle Haley being cast as Freddy and do you think it was the right move?

When I first heard they were looking for a ‘Freddy Replacement’ you can imagine the disbelief and cussing! Then, low and behold, they announce the GREAT (very underrated) Jackie Earle Haley and I thought “WOW!” He’s the ONLY one who could fill those shoes!

For us ‘old-timers’ we remember JEH from his days in the first 3 original ‘Bad News Bears’ movies and the great movie ‘Breaking Away’. Then he sorta disappeared, doing a tv show here and there until he ultimately quit acting all-together in 1993. Then, 13 years later, out of nowhere, he shows up in ‘Little Children’ with Kate Winslet and he get nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor!!! Meanwhile, he took on The Watchmen role, for which he was critically acclaimed.
At the moment, people are just wondering “Who is this guy gonna try to play Freddy?” This time next year, I think his name will be very popular. I can’t see ANYONE ELSE, other than Jackie, to take over for Freddy. Robert Englund, himself, has worked a couple times with Jackie Earle in the past and says that he’s very pleased with the choice because he knows ‘Freddy’ is in good hands with Jackie Earle Haley. And I totally agree and he’s the ONLY reason I’m even excited about a remake of this classic. For those who have never seen him act, you’re in for a TREAT!
When I heard they were replacing Robert Englund and Wes Craven was uninvolved, I was so pissed off. But after seeing the trailer, it looks pretty decent. The infamous classic will always be the best, but for a remake it doesn’t look too bad, albeit the last seconds of the trailer were stupid and uninspired.
I think it was smart on the filmmaker’s part to cast a relative “unknown” in the part. Haley is an Academy Award nominated actor so I’m anxious to see what that brings to the role.
There is only one Freddy Kruger, and his name is Robert Englund.
I hope the remake flops and bleeds money.
He looks like he’d be a pedophile. He could pull it off but I wanna see the costume design.
Robert Englund has hardly retired from acting in favor of directing/producing (he’s actually only directed 3 films and a few episodes of Freddy’s Nightmare, and to my knowledge has never been credited as a producer).
You are right about him having a lot of projects, though. In terms of acting, he did Freddy v.s Jason a mere 6 years ago, and has acted in seven movies since then. He just completed a short series for FEARnet called Fear Clinic, and currently has three additional acting projects in various stages of production.
On the subject of the “new” Freddy… while Haley seems like a decent choice to take over the role (and Englund himself has expressed confidence in his abilities), I’m more concerned with the fact that Michael Bay is attached to the project. If anything can kill a classic story, it’s having Bay involved (and on top of that, the director’s (Samuel Bayer) resume is mostly music videos from the mid-2000s).
I actually heard Robert Englund wasn’t going to reprise his role and for this i gave almost no hope to wanting to see the movie. This was of course UNTIL i saw Watchmen and found out that Roshack (Jackie Earle Haley) was going to play Freddy Krueger. I flipped and realized that it will actually be pretty good! Jackie Earle Haley did an overwhelming impressive Job in Watchmen and i definitely see him as Freddy. I’m a HUGE Robert Englund fan so of course i am disappointed but i’m very happy they chose someone like Jackie to play his role because he’s a good choice, and everyone i know agrees with me
